Upper Herring Lake

Failing Railroad Tie Seawall to Michigan Native Plants

On Upper Herring Lake a residential site had a failing railroad tie seawall.  Sections of the seawall were starting to break free from the wall.  To solve this problem an alternative solution using Michigan Native plants and coconut logs were used to prevent shoreline erosion, improve water quality, and add beauty to the shoreline.

The failing railroad ties were removed and replaced with  coir fiber logs  along the shoreline.  These logs were secured with wooden stakes and twine.  A colorful array of Michigan native plants were planted on the logs and along the shoreline.  As these plants mature and spread their   deep roots will  stabilize the shoreline.
